SUMMARY:Climate Change and the Birds of the Zuni Mountains Region of New Mexico: Past and Present\, and Maybe Future
DESCRIPTION:The Zuni region enjoys a history of ornithological study that must be the envy of every other place in interior western North America.  The specimens collected in the second half of the 19th Century and the early years of the 20th Century are mostly still extant and form the basis of assessing how the regional avifauna has changed and is changing across time.  Change has been very rapid since the turn of the new millennium.\n\n\nBorn and reared in Vallejo\, John Trochet has lived in Sacramento for the last 44 years.  He briefly practiced medicine before returning to school in ornithology\, and retired from the UC Davis Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology in 2017.  He remains a research affiliate of the museum.  Along with following the birds of the Cosumnes River Preserve and being a team member of Project Principalis in Louisiana\, the 45+ year study of the birds of the Zuni Mountains Region is one of three long-term projects that keeps him busy in retirement.

SUMMARY:Del Puerto Canyon Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip Coordinator – Ralph Baker \nDel Puerto Canyon is Stanislaus County’s most diverse natural environment. Its habitats range from grasslands along the western valley floor to chaparral\, blue oak woodland\, and pines. Over 150 species of birds have been observed here (your guide has personally seen 128). Species we could see at this time of year include Golden Eagle\, Prairie Falcon\, Greater Roadrunner\, Northern Pygmy-Owl\, Lewis’s Woodpecker\, Rock and Canyon Wren\, Wrentit\, California Thrasher\, Phainopepla (which would make it a good day\, indeed) and Rufous-crowned Sparrow. The birds\, along with interesting geology\, herps\, insects\, and other wildlife\, make this a must-see birding spot. A Townsend’s Solitaire has recently been seen in the upper reaches of the canyon and this is one of the few places in the county where it’s possible to see Steller’s Jay (though they are extremely rare\, even here). \n\nVisit the Stanislaus Audubon website HERE for a more detailed description of the canyon.\n\nWe will traverse the canyon\, stopping at several locations to bird. Most birding will be done near or from the road\, but there will be a couple of hikes away from the road; the one at Frank Raines Park will be rather steep\, but anyone who does not wish to participate in the steep climb can bird around the parking lot and picnic area. Dress in layers\, where comfortable walking shoes and bring lunch/snacks (as we will not be returning to Patterson until sometime after lunch)\, water and binoculars. A scope would also be useful if you have one \nDirections: Meet at Starbucks\, 2952 Speno Dr\, Patterson\, CA 95363

SUMMARY:Rainforest in Flight: Birds of the Ecuadorian Amazon
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  Jim Gain \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the late fall of 2025\, I joined five other adventurers for a descent into the Amazon Basin. This Zoom Program centers on our time at the Sani Bird Lodge. Nestled deep within the Ecuadorian Amazon near the broad\, meandering Napo River\, Sani Bird Lodge sits at the heart of one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth\, surrounded by pristine rainforest that forms a living bridge between Yasuní National Park to the south and the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve to the north. Together\, these protected areas create a vast ecological corridor—an unbroken sweep of forest where life thrives in staggering abundance. The lodge’s grounds are alive with over 550 bird species.\n\nJim Gain is a biologist by training\, an educator for more than 35 years\, and a lifelong naturalist whose curiosity has fueled decades of work in citizen science and conservation. His involvement with the Stanislaus Audubon Society spans over three decades in nearly every leadership role\, including past president\, complemented by service on the Central Valley Bird Club board and years with the Modesto Camera Club. He remains deeply engaged in the birding community as a Webmaster\, eBird Reviewer\, and member of the Stanislaus County and San Joaquin County Bird Records Committee. Blending photography with field observation has become one of his greatest joys\, and his images have been featured on platforms such as Audubon Field Guide\, Birds of the World\, All About Birds\, and the Merlin Bird ID App—reflecting a lifelong commitment to celebrating and sharing the beauty of the natural world.

Some possible destinations are Mono Lake County Park\, Pole Line Road\, Cottonwood Canyon Road\, Bodie\, Lundy Lakes\, Virginia Lakes Resort\, Wild Rose Canyon\, Mono Mills\, Crestview Rest Area and Lee Vining Canyon. Birds we’ll be looking for include Greater Sage Grouse\, Common Nighthawk\, Common Poorwill\, Costa’s and Calliope Hummingbird\, Williamson’s Sapsucker\, Lewis’s Woodpecker\, various flycatchers\, Plumbeous Vireo\, Pinyon Jay\, Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay\, Black-billed Magpie\, Juniper Titmouse\, American Dipper\, Mountain Bluebird\, Gray-crowned Rosy Finch\, Cassin’s Finch\, Red Crossbill\, Pine Siskin\, Black-throated\, Sagebrush and Vesper Sparrow\, Yellow-breasted Chat and Virginia’s Warbler. John began his interest in Mono Lake while working as an undergraduate assistant in a study of chipmunks in 1975. He went on to study kangaroo mice on Mono Lake’s dunes while a graduate student at U.C. Davis and has studied small mammals in the Sierra Nevada\, San Joaquin antelope squirrels and Mojave ground squirrels. John retired from teaching biology at Mills College in 1983 and currently lives near Oakdale\, CA. \n\nThis will be a 2-3 day trip. We plan to arrive late Friday (if we arrive before dark we may do a little evening birding) and then meet participants at Whoa Nellie Deli\, 22 Vista Point Dr\, Lee Vining\, CA 93541\, early Saturday morning\, but anyone is welcome to join us later.
